The laws are made for he criminals not the victims in the US system at least.Armed robbers are in jail longer than murderersRepeat child molesters are in and out of the system until they’re let out and they wind up murdering a child (like Richard Davis did with Polly Klaas in 1994 he had an 11 page wrap sheet priors)If you have money you can basically buy your way out of it (think celebrities who do stupid things like getting busted for possession, DUI’s and don’t even face jail time whereas a regular person would have to do time for these offenses)The laws regarding certain crimes need to be updated such as rape

The civil system could give you 500 words without trying.WE as a society need to rethink the whole civil court system. Ever hear of a “deep pocket” lawsuit? I’ll hit you with the basics, flesh it out any way you want and you got your essay.A “deep pocket” lawsuit is one where the plaintiff names one or more defendants based on their ability to pay damage awards [usually large corporations with a lot of assets and liability insurance]. These people are not named because they did anything unreasonable or failed to take reasonable steps to prevent damage to the plaintiff, they are named because they have a lot of cash [deep pockets]Example:Smith and Wesson manufactures a firearm. They sell that firearm to a licensed distributor for sale to the general public. The distributor sells the gun to a properly licensed customer, without violating state or federal laws. The licensed buyer gives or sells the gun to some drug addict, who uses the gun to rob a liquor store … severely injuring the store owner. In today’s world Smith and Wesson and the distributor would be more likely to be named as defendants in the civil suit than either the drug addict [that actually caused the damage] or the buyer of the gun [that transferred ownership of the gun illegally]. Why is this? It’s all about the money!Look at the four potential defendants and their actions:Smith and Wesson – manufactured the gun and sold it to a distributor (we can assume that all applicable laws were followed and that the transfer of ownership was done according to standard business practices). Were their actions reasonable? The gun functioned properly [as far as we know], so their was no defect in materials, design or workmanship. The company they sold the product to is properly licensed to carry such weapons, and the transfer happened in the same way that thousands of other transfers happen from that manufacturer. The distributor – Sold the weapon to a person with the proper license to purchase and possess such a weapon. We can assume that the standard business practices and the applicable laws were followed (7 day waiting period, background check, verify valid permit, etc). Anything going on here that this company would not normally do in the scope of their business practice? The buyer – obeyed all laws with respect to the purchase of the weapon (filled out ATF form, waited 7 days after the purchase to take delivery, etc) and was legally able to purchase the weapon (as verified by seller’s actions above), so far, so good! THEN he transfers ownership to a person with no license to possess that type of weapon! Would a reasonable person think of this as a dangerous action that might logically lead to injury to innocent people? I would! Here is where the chain of custody broke down. The shooter – Would a reasonable person expect that pointing a firearm at another person and pulling the trigger would cause injury or death to that person? Logically the permit holder that transferred the gun to the shooter and the shooter himself would be the defendants of any civil action – they are the ones that did something a reasonable person would expect would cause injury to innocent people … but they don’t have enough money to pay a big settlement to the plaintiff in the action, so the lawyers add Smith and Wesson and the distributor to the mix for the money. There you go, one of the greatest injustices of our legal system … and it goes on every day.
