You might look into the training of Danish designers during and after the war and how that influenced a whole generation of design in Scandinavia and Britain. There were no purely design schools most designers went to the Royal Academy to do fine art/ studied Architecture/ or were trained in crafts such as furniture, pottery, textiles. During the German occupation students studied at home and cycled round to their professors with their work. Training was extra good as no designers could leave the country. We all benefitted. Denmark is a small country so now they are spread all over the world. Look up Hans Wegner, Jorn Utzon, Georg Jensen etc. I think there is a book called ” Scandinavian Domestic Design” if you are interested. There is a lot of subject matter to get your teeth into.

If London’s accessible to you, you might get some inspiration here, the Museum of Domestic Design and Architecture, MODA, if you wanted to do something around domestic interiors. This might tie in with Scandinavia because a lot of Scandinavian furniture was imported into the UK after WW2 and influenced the fifties style. And of course the Victoria and Albert museum has a big design archive, lots of trade catalogues, and the Heal’s archive. The Geffrye museum has a bit of educational material online. Also, the Museum of London has a good photographic archive online.Am aware that this doesn’t really answer your question but it might give you some ideas about choosing an area to narrow your topic down to.

Perhaps you could focus on the way in which the photography in newspapers and the early women’s magazines influenced the nation’s tastes in design. You might try to focus on who were the real influences on taste – the innovative designers, or the photographers who took up some designs but ignored others. Were there equally good design trends which didn’t catch on because they weren’t reported in the media? Who were the designers whose work was never taken up at the time?

check out american photographer bill owens who did “suburbia” in the 70′s—you can write about his images (people in their houses mostly) and discuss if his work influenced today’s photographers and how we feel (and felt) about the spread of families in the 70′s and if it was a diaspora to get away from inner city problems. in the photos the subjects don’t really look happy. you could also compare him to diane artbus but that may be too obvious—compare to a european photographer at same time instead—-he is a real talent and is still prolificcheck his website out….let me know what happens
