    Ok, so the playwright arthur miller who wrote the crucible, wrote it during the McCarthyism era in america.Basically this senator, McCarthy was really anti-Communist and there was great fear of the spread of Communism. Miller, who wrote the Crucible was actually accused at one point of being a Communist sympathiser. There all these trials and basically anyone accused of being a Commie sympathiser was tainted. In the Crucible you see how the townspeople, Abigail and the Judges distort the law e.g. “if you don’t know what a witch is, how do you know you are not one.” – Something along those lines is said by Danforth during the trials I think.So yeah, the Crucible is sort of like a metaphor.It shows the fear and panic in Salem of witchcraft and how it resulted in tragedy.Just like in McCarthyism, there was great fear of Communism.You might consider fear of the unknown or unwarranted panic to be an overriding theme in it.Hope this helps :)
